PCOS: What Actually Helps
Cutting through the noise on polycystic ovary syndrome — diagnosis, weight, medication and fertility.
Polycystic ovary syndrome is one of the most common reasons women come to the clinic with irregular periods, unwanted hair growth or difficulty conceiving. It is also one of the most over-diagnosed conditions, because a scan showing multiple follicles alone is not enough.
Diagnosis needs a combination: irregular ovulation, signs of raised androgens, and ultrasound findings. Blood tests help rule out thyroid disease and raised prolactin, which can look very similar.
The single most effective intervention remains a modest, sustained reduction in weight where weight is raised — even five to ten percent can restore regular cycles. Structured exercise and a lower-refined-carbohydrate diet do more than any supplement sold online.
Medication is added according to the goal: cycle regulation, symptom control, or conception. Where fertility is the aim, ovulation induction under monitoring is safe and effective for most women, and should always be supervised rather than self-started.
